Exciting news to announce! John and I got married in beautiful Brighton on Sunday, July 5th! We would like to extend our warmest thanks to everyone who helped make our day so special. A very, very big thanks is due to my flute students who performed before the ceremony and provided such beautiful music for our guests to listen to. Thanks are also due to those of you who brought cakes, flowers and gifts. We could not have asked for a more perfect day!
Flute lessons will resume the second week of September so contact me now should you be interested in securing a lesson time.
Congratulations to all of my students for performing so beautifully at the Christmas Flute Recital yesterday at St Nicholas Church.
Christmas Flute Recital Flutists 2014
We had an excellent, supportive audience and we raised £66.34 for charity through donations and the raffle! All proceeds will be donated to Emmaus Brighton & Hove (http://www.emmausbrighton.co.uk) to support those without a home. A big thank you to St Nicholas Church for providing the venue for the recital, to Mari Hall for her skillful piano accompanying, to Matthew Suter for looking after the building for us and to my very patient boyfriend, John Smith, for all of his help setting up. Photos from the event are now on the Gallery page. Hope you all have a joyous Christmas and see you in 2015!
Everyone is warmly invited to this year’s student Christmas Recital! It will be held at St Nicholas Church, Brighton, on Sunday December 14th at 3:00pm. The recital will feature students of all ages performing flute duets, flute and piano pieces, solo works and plenty of jolly Christmas carols. Festive cakes and teas will be served following the concert. Donations for charity will be taken at the door. I look forward to seeing you there!
Hope you all had a lovely summer! My flute came on vacation with me whilst I was in France exploring the Loire Valley, the Dordogne and a bit of Brittany. Here’s a picture of me practising in the beautiful acoustics of a 13th century chapel in the countryside!
I’m really looking forward to seeing all of my students again. Please send me a note if you are interested in lessons as my teaching schedule is filling up quickly this year!
Last night I had the honour of playing with the Sussex Symphony Orchestra in the Brighton Pavilion’s Music Room. The programme included two of my favourite symphonies: Schubert’s 5th and Mozart’s glorious 41st. Rebecca Miller’s brilliant, energetic leadership of the orchestra made for a truly memorable evening!
Yesterday evening I had the pleasure of playing with the brilliant Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra at their concert at St John’s church in Burgess Hill. We had a great audience turn-out and everyone seemed to enjoy the performance immensely. The programme included Kurt Schwaen’s “Balletto” for flute and plucked string orchestra and the beautiful “Gabriel’s Oboe” (played on flute) from the film, The Mission. Perhaps the most special moment of the evening was hearing that Kurt Schwaen’s wife was pleased that we were performing her late husband’s work. We will be sending her a recording of the performance whilst celebrations take place in Berlin for what would have been Schwaen’s 105th birthday.
As Jim’s eldest grandchild it has been a joy compiling and publishing this book especially as, by some remarkable twist of fate, I ended up moving to Brighton from Canada myself in 2012. I have seen the busy streets, smelled the unique Brighton sea air, heard the seagulls cry above the music of the Pier. Softcover copies can be ordered through blurb.co.uk for as little as £12! Congratulations to my student Hannah! Hannah won first in her year group at her school’s Festival of Music with her performance of “Gavotte” from The Gondoliers by Gilbert and Sullivan. Well done!
Lots of exciting music adventures coming up in May! Be sure not to miss the Sussex Symphony Orchestra’s “My Life and Music: Conversations with Caroline Lucas” on May 24th at Hove Town Hall! This is my first concert playing with the SSO and I am thrilled that it will be for such an intriguing concert.

Just wanted to say a little hello from Canada! I’m back visiting my family and three dogs for the Easter break but will be back in Brighton soon. I’m getting plenty of flute practising in and am enjoying learning Kurt Schwaen’s “Balletto” for flute and plucked string orchestra. I’ll be performing this piece with the Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra in June!
