“It’s the achieving that’s the fun!”

I was watching this year’s first episode of Gardener’s World on Friday and especially enjoyed Carol Klein’s interview with legendary gardener Beth Chatto. One line in particular really stood out for me. Beth, who is now 94, said, “It’s the achieving that’s the fun, not the achievement. I can’t get up in the morningĀ and feel a lot better because I’ve got an O.B.E.” To which Carol continued, “But you can get up and feel better when you see your garden?” “Absolutely!” Beth replied. I couldn’t agree with Beth more. If we, as musicians, focus really intently on the achieving then maybe we too might win an O.B.E., but ultimately it is making all that beautiful music in the first place that is worth so much more. So, play on and keep achieving!

Fun and colourful technique bags

Just finished making some fun technique bags for two of my students who will be taking ABRSM exams later this year! Each bag has colour-coded note cards for each of the scales and arpeggios the students need to know, as well has 36 different ways expressively practise them!
